About Steven J. Lee, M.D.

Dr. Steven J. Lee is the Chief of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC, and the Associate Director of the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT), the first hospital-based facility dedicated to the study of sports medicine and research in the country.  Dr. Lee is perennially recognized as one of New York Magazine’s Best Doctors, Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in Orthopedic Surgery, America’s Top Orthopedists, US News and World Report Top Doctors, and New York Super Doctors Hall of Fame.

 

Dr. Lee is a board certified, double fellowship trained in Hand and Upper Extremity as well as Sports Medicine, and specializes in the treatment of the most complex disorders of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee and foot/ankle.  He received his M.D. through a highly competitive 6-year accelerated college/medical school program at Lehigh University and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his orthopedic residency at Stony Brook University Hospital, his hand and upper extremity fellowship at NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases, and then a second fellowship in sports medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, the oldest and one of the most prestigious sports medicine fellowships in the country.  During his training, he participated in the care of the New York Jets, Islanders, Rangers and Hofstra University Athletics.  Dr. Lee has served as the team physician for the New Jersey Red Dogs and Gladiators Professional Arena Football teams, and for Hofstra University Athletic teams.  Dr. Lee is an active Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopedic Association, the latter being the oldest and most prestigious orthopedic association in the world comprising less than 10% of practicing orthopedists, and signifies honor, accomplishment, and leadership in orthopedics.

 

Dr. Lee has been pioneering and advancing orthopedic research and academics since 1991.  He is nationally known for his cutting edge and innovative new techniques to treat the most difficult disorders in orthopedics today.  As such, he is actively involved in the instruction of doctors and allied health professionals, and frequently instructs courses throughout country.   He also serves on the orthopedic residency and sports medicine fellowship admissions committees at Lenox Hill Hospital.  His dedication to teaching and academics has been recognized by being honored eight times for the Teacher of the Year and Mentorship awards by his peers at Lenox Hill Hospital.  He has over 25 publications in peer reviewed journals and books, and over 25 presentations at national meetings on diverse areas of orthopedics.  He is however most proud of and best known among his peers for his expert surgical skills.
